In early 2022, I released two volumes of orchestrated songs and pieces I’d recorded over the preceding 13 years under the banner of MPO (Mike Penny Orchestra), and now I am proud to release my first all-solo-shamisen album!
For Solo Shamisen: A Prelude to Pretense features a three-movement sonata (a “Shamisenata”, of course), most of which was composed in late 2022, as well as what I consider to be my best arrangements of Western classical pieces and traditional Tsugaru folk pieces.
It was high time I did this!
I’ve been asked at various points over the years whether I would ever put something out to showcase my solo playing, and I am very happy to finally have this collection to share after nearly 20 years of shamisening!
I hope that you enjoy the music, and I hope that the raw beauty of the shamisen and my deep affection for it and its versatility shine through these recordings.

初めてのソロ三味線アルバムをリリースしました！
2022年の前半にMPO（Mike Penny Orchestra）というソロスタジオプロジェクトで2つのアルバムをリリースしました。
私が2004年に三味線を習い始めてもうすぐに20年になるところで、過去20年間「もうそろそろソロアルバムを出したら？」と言われたことが多く、この度は初めて完全に1本の三味線だけでアレンジした無伴奏三味線のための曲集をシェアできてとても嬉しいです。
このアルバムに、西洋クラシックと伝統的な津軽三味線の技を混ぜて作曲した「シャミセナタ」という三味線のための3楽章ソナタも入っています。
このアルバムをお聞きいただく方に、私が全曲に三味線に対しての感情と愛を込めたことが感じられると幸せです。
